Ingredient Highlight: Bee Venom - Lacrème Beauté

Ingredient Highlight: Bee Venom

Often called “nature’s botox”, bee venom is a multifaceted ingredient and is considered one of the Earth’s most potent anti-agers. Historically, bee venom has held a revered position in traditional medicine practices across the globe. The ancient Egyptians, for example, are known to have used bee venom to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, while traditional Chinese medicine practitioners have employed bee venom acupuncture for centuries, in which diluted bee venom is introduced directly into acupuncture points as a treatment for specific conditions. In Europe, "apitherapy" or bee venom therapy has been recognised as a method to alleviate pain and inflammation in conditions such as rheumatism. Across all these cultures, the therapeutic properties of bee venom, particularly its anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities, have been revered and integrated into holistic healing approaches.

Properties of Bee Venom in Skincare

Bee venom has more recently been spotlighted in the skincare arena. Used topically, it tricks the skin into thinking that it has been stung ever so slightly. This boosts blood flow and nutrient delivery to the skin, and triggers self-healing mechanisms that include the production of collagen and elastin, essential proteins that contribute to t skin's elasticity and firmness. Bee venom is also rich in important antiageing peptides, notably melittin, which has been studied for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-wrinkle beneftis.

Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory properties inherent in bee venom help to soothe redness and irritation, potentially assisting conditions like acne and rosacea. Moreover, its antimicrobial effects serve as a defense, ensuring a healthier skin environment.

Sourcing Our Bee Venom

The method of extracting bee venom can vary, and some methods can harm the bees. Potency can also vary, so we take our bee venom sourcing very seriously and buy exclusively from one farm with whom we have a close relationship. Our bee venom is harvested ethically from African bees, renowned for their powerful stings and the high concentration of active ingredients. A glass panel with a very light electric current is placed near the hive, slightly agitating but not harming any bee that comes into contact with it, which causes it to sting the glass. The sting glances off the solid panel and the bee flies away unharmed, leaving behind a small quantity of venom that is later collected. Studies show that this practice neither damages the bee colonies nor honey production, allowing us to enjoy the incredible benefits of this ancient medicine without causing harm.

A Word of Caution

While the properties of bee venom are powerful and compelling, bee venom can sometimes be problematic for those with allergies. We always suggest a patch test before use.
